The boys are ours. 100% our sons and brothers. But, we adopted them again anyway this week.
The boys don't have birth certificates, and most of their documentation is in Chinese. So, we wanted to get them amended certificates of foreign birth to help make life a bit easier. From registering for school to getting driver's licenses. It will just make life easier.
But, the only way the state of California has to issue these documents is through the state adoption process. So, for the past few months, we went through the adoption process, AGAIN. Social worker visits, paperwork, the whole shebang, ugh.
Finally, today, was our court appointment. The courthouse does adoptions all on the same day. And, the court was FILLED with families celebrating. They had cakes and balloons. Gifts and family members. There were tears and hugs. Children were joining their families for Christmas. It was a lot of joy and happiness, and would put anyone in a good mood.
So, we did our best not to be downers. We weren't there to create our family, we were there to get paperwork sorted, and kinda grumpy about spending thousands to do it. But, we talked to the boys about how happy everyone was, and how we were that happy the day we got to meet them. And, we waited our turn in the long line to see the judge.
The boyrs were still concerned, they don't like anything that feels like social workers and agencies. Especially Jefferson. But, they did like the sheriff stickers the court house guards gave them.
Once we were in the courtroom, it took about two minutes to get our paperwork signed, even with Jefferson yelling "No!" at the judge every time she asked him a question. So much for role playing that at home. Doh!
Judge: Are you excited to be adopted?"
Jefferson: "No!" (buries head in Mom's shoulder)
Judge: "Do you love your mommy?"
Jefferson: NO! (continues to avoid eye contact and burrow into Melinda's armpit)
Steven: I love mommy and daddy.
Thanks for pulling us out of that one Steven. The judge correctly interpreted Jefferson's "no's" as "I don't want to interact with you" and not "my parents are the worst." And, we're on our way! So glad to have that one finished. Love you boys!
