Pumpkin Fail

This year, our girls were finally old enough to appreciate pumpkin goop. No complaints about the sticky orange strings or slimy seeds. They were serious about gutting their pumpkins. We let them pick out our patterns this year. Adelaide picked Elsa, no surprise there. Eleanor wanted Dora the Explorer. But, not just Dora, Boots too! And a cat, riding on a broom, with the moon at their backs. Sure, Melinda said. Looks easy enough. Three hours later, the kids were long ago tucked into bed and the pumpkin looked like a squirrel had attacked it. It was beyond saving, and Matt really tried to save it (like a knight in shining armor with a mini-pumpkin saw instead of a broad sword).  Melinda gutted a spare pumpkin and Matt carved a simplified Dora so Eleanor wouldn't lose total faith in her parents. See how much we love you Eleanor? We stayed up until almost midnight worrying over ruined gourds to make sure you could sing "I'm the Map" to a jack-o-lantern. At least...

The Fireplace

While we prefer to spend our weekends enjoying the California sunshine, we have been keeping up on house projects to pull our fixer-upper together. Matt has replaced all the electrical sockets, many of the light switches and half the sinks. Melinda has cleaned and scrubbed every nook and cranny. From the beginning, Melinda tried and tried to prioritize the practical projects first. So, the yard is all dirt right now... planting flowers in a drought is not as important as fixing leaking faucets. But, there was one thing about the those that she just couldn't get over... the oversized marble fireplace that dominated the family room wall. It was HUGE and PINK. Melinda finally couldn't take it anymore and made destroying the fire place her number one request on Matt's honey-do list.  This picture does not do justice to how pink the tile was in real life. Matt found the original brick under there. Eleanor really wanted to help with the demolition. She put...

Pumpkin Patch

We miss the pumpkin patches in Virginia. They were huge, more like mini-carnivals than mere vegetable gardens. The giant slides, the huge bounce castles, pumpkin zip-lines.... ahhhh... fond memories. We haven't been able to find an extravagant fall festival here, but we did find a modest pumpkin patch for a fun morning out. Jed and Eve drove down to get lost in the corn maze with us. And, they dutifully rode around the wilted pumpkin patch on a scratchy hay bale, pulled by a tractor, all in the name of being a good Aunt and Uncle. We all had a great time. Poor goat was in a make-shift pen, set up to make the whole thing more "farmy," we guess...  Look Sunflowers!  Brave corn maze adventurers! Hay bale riding on a sunny, sunny day. Pumpkins at the patch were an incredible 2-3 times more than the grocery store. So, we stopped at Sprouts on the way home to pick up some carvers.  Bonus pics for grandparents... the kids looked so cute in their ...

Brick-Or-Treat

Having year-long Legoland passes has been a lot of fun! Part of our passes included admission to Legoland's brick-or-treat festivities. Trick-or-treating for legos? Yes, please! The kids enjoyed the rides and not-so-spooky decorations around the park. The lines for the trick-or-treat booths were SO long, but as members we'd already received full bags of all the goodies. So, the girls spent a lot of their time in the evening at the dance stations, having a blast doing the Monster Mash. They also enjoyed Legoland's SeaLife Aquarium and watching the fish nibble on pumpkins under the water. At the Aquarium  High Five!  Boo!  Not even phased The camera is over here! Oh well... Another forced photo-op. The world's creepiest duplo block. Seriously, scary vampire dude...  The kids proudly hung their "official boogie monster" ribbons in their room. Spooktacular!

Jed and Eve are Here!

Excitement of excitements! Jed and Eve have moved into the Canyon Lake house while they do some job hunting in the San Diego area. We drove up to help them unload their u-haul... or rather, add a bunch of chaos to the move by unleashing our children in the house. Melinda's dad helped them drive down, and he was happy to distract the grandchildren with long walks to feed the ducks while Matt moved furniture and Melinda made dinner. Welcome to CA!  Moving break! Feeding the ducks with Grandpa. Hurray! We are so happy to have them nearby.
