Last year, the girls learned about Elf on the Shelf from their friends. And, they were dramatically sad we didn't have one. Long, wishful signs at Target whenever we passed the Elf on the Shelf display shelves sad. Drawing pictures of the elf they wished they had sad. Saving their own pennies to buy a friend of their own.
However, their grinch of a mother refused to pay full retail for a plush elf doll, even if they used their own dollars. Nope, total rip off. However, after Christmas they all went on sale, so, you know, that's okay. The got-it-on-clearance-elf has been at the back of Melinda's closet for months awaiting her big debut.
And, as expected, she made her arrival on December 1. Sitting at the bottom of the chimney she flew down... And, from then on, Melinda had to move the elf every night before bed time to keep up the game of hide and seek. And, it was hard work. So, we took pictures to prove that, you know, we're good parents. Moving the elf makes us good parents, right?

She's here! The girls named her Holly.
Flying in from the North Pole was tiring,
so on Day #2 she took a nap.
Do you want to build a snow man?
Boys knocked this one over pretty quickly...
Roasting a marshmallow.
Sending a report to Santa.
Melinda thought this candy cane trapeze was AMAZING
but Adelaide said the elf was a pretty bad at hiding. Doh!
The elf floated to the top of our front door.
Eleanor was super concerned on how we would get it down.
Taking a spin with the holiday cars. Miraculously, the
boys didn't knock her off the edge of the ledge.
Reindeer antlers on the mirror.
(Steven insisted they were moose antlers)
Adelaide thought this worthy of a selfie.
Snowman donuts! This was
probably Jefferson's favorite.
Hanging out on the Lego table. By the end of the
day, Jefferson had built her many towers.
Free kisses! Adelaide did think to ask,
"Did she pay for that mistletoe?"
The elf got sick! Eleanor points out,
"Elf isn't a very good doctor.
She is just trying all the stuff...
and she has a Band-Aid on her hat"
Girls liked the tree house.
Holly dressed as Batgirl!
Scavenger hunt for Christmas Crackers!
Like this one.
Must...reach...cookies...
Cleaning the fire place for Santa.
Green Elf Milk
Getting close!
The boys thought this was hilarious!
She wrapped herself.
Coloring pages for sick kids.
Mailing herself to the North Pole.
So, with great sadness (rejoicing), we say good bye to Holly as she goes back to the North Pole (Mom's closet). Mailing herself to Santa was supposed to be her final "hurrah!" for the year. Melinda was OUT of ideas. But, then Adelaide and Eleanor set up a Santa trap. And, Melinda decided to use the opportunity to have Holly trip it while the family was out for Christmas Eve visits.
"Free Cookies In Here Right Now! I
Tried One They Are Really Good!"
"Santa is so big that he will knock over the
stick and get caught in the bag."
(They tested it on Matt, totally worked.)
CAUGHT!
The kids were pretty amused that Holly got caught up in the trap. And, they decided not to make another one, since she promised not to tell Santa if they promise not to tell about her cookie theft. The boys were particularly tickled that she "bit" one of the cookies. Merry Christmas Holly! See you next year.
