Do You Wanna Watch a Movie?

Up until this week, our kids had not yet seen Disney's latest animated movie, Frozen. But, Adelaide has re-enacted the movie so many times on the playground with her friends (who presumably had seen the movie), that she knew the entire plot, had memorized every "memorable" line and could even sing most of the songs.

And, since Melinda caved and got them the soundtrack a couple months ago, now even Eleanor wanders around the house singing/yelling "Let it go!" at the top of her lungs.

So, Tuesday was a BIG day in the Jensen household. Because, Frozen finally came out on DVD. At last, they could actually watch the movie they had been crazy about for months.

To celebrate the event - yes, we turn simple DVD releases into "events" around here - Melinda made the girls Elsa and Anna dresses. Now, Melinda doesn't sew. At least, not very well. Oh, loose buttons are one thing, but princess dresses are in another league.

Normally, we would just buy whatever costumery we wanted to support the girl's imaginative adventures. But, we were thwarted by the entreprenuerial spirit of our fellow citizens - who evidently bought up the entire stock of Frozen dresses last fall and were now selling them on eBay for five to eight times the original purchase price.

So, Melinda did the best she could with the help of a sparkly tube top, Arlene's fabric glue, felt, scissors, tulle, elastic, puffy paint, Wal-mart, and a little hand stitching.

It was no small endeavor for one so unfamiliar with fabrics and sparkles, but Melinda skidded into the finish line, finishing the outfits the night before the release. The girls were delighted and loved the dresses - SUCCESS!

Tuesday after school, they rushed to put on their new outfits. They didn't even mind waiting for Dad to come home so they could watch the movie, since they were enjoying playing princess sisters so much.

Elsa and Anna have arrived.

After putting on the dresses, they ran
all the way to the mailbox up the street.

It's here! Thanks Amazon Prime Membership.

Back they ran to the house, giggling all the way.

Eleanor is our master colorer. She loves coloring.
A freshly printed selection of Frozen coloring
pages kept her occupied until Dad came home.

Adelaide is less of a Crayloa girl. She gave her
coloring pages to Eleanor and helped Mom make
snowman mashed potatoes to go with dinner.

 Hurray! Movie time at last!

The final verdict? With lots of songs, a talking snowman and magic ice powers, the girls were destined to love the show.

Since most of the musical numbers were in the first half of the show, the second half didn't hold Eleanor's attention quite as well. She happily wandered off to play with her dolls.

And, without the distraction of singing along with the characters, Adelaide began to notice some of the plot gaps. So we started fielding questions like, "Why does Anna think Kristoff is her true love? She's only known him for a day and he's a stranger too..." and "Why doesn't Elsa use her ice powers to get out of those chains?"

Yet, she still squealed like, well, a girl, when Kristoff and Anna kissed. And, both girls clapped their way through the ice-skating wrap-up at the end.

We think our Elsa and Anna dresses will get lots of use in the coming months as the girls continue to bounce around our living room - singing, spinning and pretending to build ice castles.
