Is there anything better than an afternoon at the beach? After school on Wednesday, Melinda took the girls to the beach and met up with her Uncle David and Grandpa Thomas.
Adelaide is still recovering from her illness and is not allowed to play on the playground for another month, as her infection might have left her with a swollen spleen. A fall off a bike or slide could be dangerous. Sand castle building, however, is still okay. But, she tired quickly and complained of itching all over.
So, Uncle David carried her back up to the van after a fun couple hours of playing in the sand. That night, before bedtime, she insisted there were red spots on her leg. But, we couldn't see anything and she soon fell fast asleep.
Poor Adelaide! The next morning she awoke covered in a red, raised rash everywhere sunscreen had been applied. This has never happened before, but our allergist told us this allergy can pop-up unexpectedly. We were able to consult him first thing in the morning because it just so happened that Eleanor had an appointment for a Food Challenge!
Last week Eleanor's annual blood test revealed that her egg allergy had decreased dramatically in scale. To be clear, she still has an allergy, but it is not as severe as it was last year. The protein that causes the allergic reaction is altered in baking such that many people with egg allergies are able to tolerate it.
Last spring, the last time Eleanor accidentally ate a muffin with egg in it, it was clear she was not okay with even baked egg - breaking out in hives all over after she ate it.
So we spent four hours at the doctor's office under observation. Eleanor was allowed to eat increasing amounts of cupcake at 30 minutes intervals while nurses checked her for signs of a break out.
Uncle David was a champ. He spent at least 45 minutes
building castles with the kids and letting them bury his feet.
Caught ya!
Grandpa Thomas and Eleanor,
staying cool in the shade.
Adelaide was thrilled to have a shoulder safari
on the tallest pair of shoulders she's ever met.

Keeping Eleanor entertained for four hours
in a small, marked off area of a
doctor's lab was no small task.
The good news, no, the great news - Eleanor passed her Food Challenge! She can now have baked egg in cake, pancakes, muffins and cookies. Breakfast-style eggs, french toast, merengue, and mayonnaise are still off the table for now. But, the doctor is hopeful she will one day grow out the allergy entirely.
The bad news, Adelaide appears to be allergic to most sunscreens. We've bought her, her very own bottle of hypo-allengenic, all natural, zinc-based sunscreen in hopes of preventing both sunburn and rashes for future beach trips.
She dealt with her rash like a champ, and was excited to show it to her friends at school. She's thrilled to have her own bottle of "no itch" sunscreen and shows it to everyone that comes to visit.

yay! i hope Eleanor's allergy clears up altogether since it's already improved so much. Jed said you and he both had issues with sunscreen so i hope that clears up too!
