The Pineapple Express

Today we wound our way across the island to Oahu's North Shore to crash at Melinda cousin's house.

After a leisurely breakfast at the Chinese buffet, we turned our car toward Diamond Head. We decided against doing the full hike with three kids off their time zones... But, everyone enjoyed the view.

Another angle of a great view

From there, we headed out to the destination the kids were most excited about - The Dole Pineapple Plantation! With a giant gift shop, maze, gardens, train... and of course, pineapple plants, it was a must stop shop. It was pretty hot out, so a Dole Whip break was necessary too.

Down by the station, early in the morning...

Steven's favorite place on the island... or just ever.
Train! Choo choo! Train! Train!

Selfie on the Pineapple Express!

Steven was only supposed to have a few sips,
but he wrapped his arm around Matt's
drink and refused to let go. Drank it all.

We were excited about the maze, but there were no shade trees and it go hot fast. So, we made the executive decision to put Eleanor in charge of getting us out. Eleanor doesn't care about silly things like paths or signs... she cut a path right through the hedges and out the exit.

Enjoying the last of the shade before braving the maze.

out the cocoa pods.

 Sweltering in the giant maze...
even our Dole Whips couldn't keep us cool.

in the garden.

Before leaving, the girls picked out Christmas ornaments at the gift shop. And, Matt spoiled Melinda with a beautiful necklace to celebrate their 10th anniversary. From there, we drove to North Share, stopping at Waimea Valley. No pictures, since the kids were napping in their car seats and we took turns getting out of the car. They woke up just in time to check out the Puu o Mahuka Heiau, the ruins of an old Hawaiian religious site.

Stretching their legs at the heaiu.

And, finally, finally, after a very long day, we made it to Laie. Since the Plickas were still at swim practice, we stopped by the LDS Temple to admire the fountains.

Whew! A big road trip deserves a big dinner! Fortunately, Joe and Emily know all the best local eats. Off to Seven Brothers for shrimp and rice.

Shaka!

Hope you aren't all tired of vacation photos yet, because we intend on having lots for more fun here over the next few days!
