Trick-or-Treat, Lots of Treats!

Halloween can be a stress-inducing holiday when your kids have food allergies. Poor Adelaide broke out in hives at a Halloween party last weekend because she was sharing toys with other kids that had eaten peanut butter on crackers.

The proliferation of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers Minis being tossed casually at children is enough to give us nightmares. For real, we have nightmares.

But, we're determined that our children won't miss out on the best parts of childhood because of fear. We did everything we could to manage the risks and keep Halloween safe but still so much fun. We had a lesson on trick-or-treating rules, Melinda did all the baking for the kids' school parties, the epipens went everywhere and the Switch Witch was waiting with safe candy to switch with the girls when they got home. After lots of planning and prepping, the holiday was a big success.

We had our annual pumpkin carving party on Monday. We bought the kids a pumpkin peg pounder to let them experience the joy of putting holes in a pumpkin without the danger of knifes. Adelaide happily pounded sparkly shapes into her pumpkin while Eleanor was more interested in stabbing hers with a crayon.

Adelaide carefully removed her pumpkin
seeds with a spoon, one at a time.
Eleanor plunged right in.

Whack! Whack! Whack!

The girls' finished product.

Matt carved the Princess and the Frog, much
to the delight of his little princesses. Melinda's
pumpkin clearly needs some anger management help.

Mom and Dad's pumpkins all lit up.

Of course, we tried to make the girls pose for obligatory costume picture (Dr. Eleanor and Dora the Explorer).

Hey! The camera is over here.

Yes, Eleanor? You need to use the potty?

No, really, over here. Look straight in front of you.

The kids had a great time trick-or-treating with Dad, despite a sprinkling of rain that brought them home a little early. When they returned home, the Switch Witch was ready with a candy swap.

Mom, aka Switch Witch, has baskets
ready for her lil punkins.

Yummm… Pez. Nothin' but sugar.

Happy Halloween everyone!
