The Rest of the Universe

So, we did do things OTHER than Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Though, sometimes we had to drag the kids away from Hogsmeade to see the studio tour and try the Transformers ride.

Our honest assessment, a lot of the rides were pretty jerky and fast-paced. The kids will probably like them more as teenagers. But, they were a little much for little ones. Even the Minions ride, which was definitely meant for kids, set both Melinda and Steven to feeling queasy. At one point, we promised the kids a nice easy ride and boarded them on the studio tour. After the tram was attacked by dinosaurs and almost overturned in an earthquake, they were demanding a return to the safety of Hogsmeade. Sorry kiddos!

play on the Minion playground

The boys were very excited to take a break from the rides and meet the dinosaurs and transformers... until they met the dinosaurs and transformers. So big, so loud, and so real looking. The boys were a little concerned about the giant robots from the beginning. But, they were really looking forward to meeting the raptor. They stood in line and waited and waited for it to come out... and then it did and it was roaring, and moving and maybe thinking about eating them...

They reluctantly posed for a picture with Mom, who insisted after waiting in line so long. But, when Melinda left them to pose alone in front of the velociraptor, Steven bolted. Jefferson, not willing to be left as the only snack option ran after him. The dinosaur keeper laughed and commented, "Good move boys, reduce your odds of getting eaten by 50%." They much preferred the fossil dinosaurs in the play area to the "real" one.

 Transformers are cool,
but also a little concerning.

Look at those faces... so not cool
with this decision.

Dead dinosaurs, so much better.

A character they weren't afraid to pose with...

The kids did enjoy the many shows, including the special effects show and the animal show. They got to meet some of the Hogwarts owls, which Adelaide thought was the best.

Waiting for a show to start, and eating the Honeydukes stash.

All in all, it was a fun trip. The kids were pretty worn out, but would go back to Hogsmeade again in a heartbeat. But, maybe not the velociraptors... ;).
