Adelaide is obsessed with Harry Potter, but was a little embarrassed because none of her friends are into the series (yet). But, we promised her, promised her it was cool.
When we found out Jim Kay was speaking at the San Diego Library as part of a free Comic Con event sponsored by Scholastic, we knew she'd love it. Matt left work early and picked up the girls from summer camp to line up three hours early. Adelaide was shocked to see how many people were all in line already. And, so many in robes and Hogwarts gear. Other Hufflepuffs were high-fiving her and complimenting her robes. She was in her element, and so excited! She had found her people, and they were wizards!
The presentation was INCREDIBLE. He shared about his process, the many versions he'd done before finalizing his images, how he came up with the ideas. The kids were mesmerized. Also, he's a Hufflepuff, so Adelaide was just thrilled.

Waiting in line!
The girls were in the first 100 and so
got free copies of the illustrated version!
She fell in love with each new page.
At the end, everyone was invited up for a book signing. They were told they could ask one brief question to keep the line moving. Adelaide decided to ask Mr. Kay if he would include kids with disabilities in his images, because she had a brother with one arm. He listened carefully, shared with her his struggle with bi-polar and how important he felt it was to educate others about disabilities. He told her about trying to work in a child with a wheel chair in the train image and how he would continue to include kids with differences in his art. He was very kind and Adelaide was on cloud nine.
Waiting in line for their
books to get signed.
Eleanor got to say hi!
Taking the time to talk to Adelaide.
