The Autumn Moon Festival

Today was the Autumn Moon Festival. It's one of the four major festivals in China. Adelaide came home from school very excited to tell us all about the legend of the Moon Goddess she learned in class.

Melinda agreed celebrating the Moon Festival was an awesome idea. And, she even promised to make moon cakes - right there in the car on the way home from school, without even googling the recipe. Whoops!

Thank goodness for Amazon Prime. We got a couple books delivered asap. Unfortunately, Amazon couldn't help with the moon cakes... which require almost a whole day of cooking plus special molds... eek!

So, Melinda's hasty promise to "make moon cakes" turned into a frantic search of local Asian markets, which were all sold out. Turns out, moon cakes sell like hot cakes.

We were just about to substitute marshmallow moon pies for moon cakes when Eve swooped in to the rescue. She called around the markets in their area and found a Ranch Market in Temecula that still had a handful left yesterday evening. We high-tailed it over there and snatched them up.

So, this morning, we were all ready to go!

Our Moon Festival Supplies!

The girls decided to wear their
Chinese dresses to church.
Steven finally fits his outfit too.
They all looked fabulous.

While the little ones napped after church, Adelaide
decided to make herself a jade rabbit lantern.

 It turned out pretty awesome!
It was the perfect centerpiece for
our stir fry dinner.

Moon cakes!

When the sun set, we walked to the neighborhood pool where we had a clear view of the sky and tables to eat our moon cakes on. The cakes were delicious. Eleanor, in particular, couldn't get enough. Plus, the full moon was an incredible blood moon. It was a wonderful, warm night to sit out together and appreciate this amazing universe.
