The big 31 was a family affair, just the four of us. The kids made Dad birthday signs and were so excited to celebrate. Matt's co-workers took him out to lunch. For dinner we had Matt's favorite, pork pie with a cheese crust. Matt also made a request for an ice cream cake, which Melinda and the kids had a messy fun time making the night before. It was a feast!

The only small mishap came when Melinda tried to find candles. When you live somewhere a long time, little things kind of build up. Like all the extra potting soil in the shed from dozens of planting projects, the pile of paper plates of various prints leftover from different parties and picnics, and that drawer that always has extra candles and matches. 

Well, since we moved, that "drawer" with all the leftover stuff in it doesn't exist anymore. Ooops. We made due with a lit match. 

Fingerprint balloons decorated our walls.

Since Matt's last birthday, he changed jobs, sold a home, moved across the country, ate over 100 avocados and, together, we sent in all our paperwork to adopt a baby from China. We can't wait to see what 31 brings. A new house? Our adopted baby home at last? Gray hair?
