Bring on the Cicadas

Summer weather is here, and it is glorious! We've been enjoying being outside at every opportunity.

Lots of trips to the pool all week

 Long walks to feed ducks
and spy on rabbit families

Frequent trips to the splash park

An outdoor movie with friends on Friday

But, the best activity of the weekend was definitely going to Pohick Bay with our friends the Rahlfs on Saturday night. We are so happy they moved to the area!

The cicadas were deafening at the park, but that was kind of fun. The swarm hasn't reached our neighborhood yet so it was a first for the kids. Eleanor retains the dubious honor of being the only one to try to eat a cicada. And, she would have succeeded too, if Mom hadn't fish-hooked it out of her mouth. Moms can be such a bummer sometimes.

We had an amazing picnic, s'mores, fun at the playground and even a walk on the shore.

Somehow Matt can balance both of them.

Adelaide was afraid of bugs flying into her mouth.
She told me that doing this was a "tongue screen"
(like sunscreen) to keep her mouth safe.

Tony could use a tongue screen right here as
Soren tempts his tastebuds with a cicada shell.

We gave Eleanor and Anika yummy graham crackers
but they both tried to eat handfuls of dirt instead. Sheesh.

Adelaide thought Lorelei was amazing. She followed
her older friend everywhere and just beamed whenever they played.

On Sunday we were hit with some thunderstorms, so we were only able to fit in a quick walk. What's that about? Doesn't Mother Nature know we only have so many days of warm weather to enjoy a year before winter ruins our fun?

For posterity, we still had fun.

Eleanor has taken the Barefoot Contessa
concept to a whole new level.

Try to help feed this girl and she will
scream and cry at the insult. She wants
to do it all by herself. Messy, but we're proud
of her determination to do it, no matter how
much oatmeal she gets up her nose.

Popcorn party! Crunch, crunch.
