A December Weekend

There are a lot of fun things to do in DC anytime of the year. But, there are even more around the holidays. It's hard to fit it all in, but we are sure going to try.

Saturday morning, Melinda took the girls to a "Civil War Christmas" event. Cherry Hill farm, which was around during the Civil War, re-creates how Christmas would have been in that time period with actors and decorations.

It was billed as a family fun activity with kid crafts and stories, however, the staff were pretty unwelcoming. One woman followed us around the house hovering over Adelaide, crying out "Don't Touch!" whenever she so much as looked at something, and wondering allowed if I could handle two small children on my own. We kept our visit short. Poor Adelaide, it's hard to constantly be scolded when you aren't doing anything wrong.

Outside the house, before everyone
started cramping our style.

Our "shadow" even followed us into the
kid's craft corner and wouldn't let Adelaide
do her own stickers. Melinda couldn't lose
her, politely or otherwise, until a
couple other families came and
she hurried off to harass their kids.

There was an enthusiastic actor there reciting
The Night Before Christmas with props.

We ended the trip with a visit to the playground where
cute little girls are always welcome.

Saturday night we took the girls to the LDS temple in Maryland to see the lights and decorations at the visitors center. Both girls were enamored by the lights, especially Eleanor. Our little baby just couldn't get over how bright and shiny everything was!

Eleanor is a little confused that stranger has our camera.

Clearly the girls have better things
to do than pose for a picture with Mom.

Mom and Dad loved the Christmas trees and nativities
inside the visitor's center, but the kids were anxious to
go back outside to see the lights again.

Eleanor wanted to explore (pull ornaments off
the trees), but Adelaide kept her roped in.

Sunday night we let loose our inner-artichets with some gingerbread (okay, graham cracker) houses. Our final products were a bit wobbly - Adelaide's actually collapsed under the weight of the candy on the roof. But, this only added to the fun and didn't diminish the taste in the slightest.

We were impressed that most of Adelaide's candy
actually ended up on the house and not in her mouth.

Moments before the collapse... we think the
Peep snowmen on the roof are what did it in.
Adelaide took it in stride when her
"triangle house" turned into a "rectangle house."

Unlike Adelaide, Melinda ate about
half the candy that was supposed to go on her
house. She's a minimalist.

These overachievers even added a chimney.

Oh, and here's Eleanor - cause she's so dang cute!

Cuddle Me!

  1. ADORABLE! I'm not going to make it a secret; I basically want to be just like you when I'm a mom, Melinda.

    The girls are so cute!

  2. I hate it when old people forget what it is like to have toddlers. Poor girl.
