Post-tropical Storm Sandy or Frankenstorm, depending on which meteorologist you are listening too, had completely moved out of our area by Halloween. We were so lucky to have beautiful weather yesterday for trick-or-treating.
Somehow this year, we got onto a list for the Obama ground campaign. Polite but persistent liberal college students knock on our door almost daily asking for "Mr. Deo," someone who, as far as we can tell has never lived on our street. In an attempt to stem the tide of unwanted solicitors, we put a Romney/Ryan sign in our yard a couple weeks ago. It didn't work even a little bit. Melinda took down the sign during the storm and decided not to put it back up for Halloween in case some teenagers were in the mood to play some tricks.
So, of course, Matt decided to carve the Romney/Ryan campaign logo into his pumpkin. So much for an apolitical holiday. It was a great carving job though, and got tons of compliments from the neighbors. Some people even took pictures of their kids next to it. Go figure.
We got all our pumpkins ready the night before. We take pumpkin carving seriously in this family - with lots of time spent on complicated patterns. Adelaide is a little too young for knifes. We set her up with a mini-pumpkin, crayons and stickers. She was thrilled, until she looked up and saw the rest of the family with big pumpkins and carving equipment. She could see when she was being short changed! Adelaide became Mom's carving buddy. She picked a Dracula pattern and helped poke all the holes.
It's a good thing Melinda is a master pumpkin carver,
because Adelaide was pretty haphazard when poking the pattern.
Eleanor was happy to adopt the mini-pumpkin.

The finished masterpieces.

Adelaide was anxious all day for the trick-or-treating to get started. There were quite a few breakdowns and some tears while we waited for the big event. Why couldn't the clock tick faster? Finally, when it was time, there were only slight delays as we forced the kids to take the obligatory costume photos.
Elmo and Big Bird! (Yes, we know it's a duck, just roll with it...)
Melinda had matching Bumble Bee and Lady Bug ensembles picked out for the girls,
but Eleanor growth spurted out of her lady bug costume and Adelaide
insisted on the Elmo costume our neighbor gave her. Turns our she has
awesome two year old style. Everywhere we went, other small children yelled, "Elmo!",
"I like it." and "I wanna be Elmo!" One sweet little girl, probably 18 months old,
followed Adelaide around our neighborhood fall festival trying to "Hug Elmo!"

Off the trick-or-treaters go!
We thought Adelaide would last about half an hour trick-or-treating, but she went a whole hour and a half. She was so tired at the end, she could barely move her feet. But, she kept pushing forward. This morning, she was begging to go trick-or-treating again. Don't worry kiddo, that candy stash is going to last you for quite some time.

Bravo to such fine looking pumpkins! We thought Maia would tucker out on trick-or-treating too, but once she figured out that it was just a bunch of people giving her candy, she was committed to go as long as we'd let her. Happy Halloween!
