The 4-H Fair

Occassionally, we like to take our certifiably city girls out into the country...well, at least into the suburbs, and expose them to some wildlife beyond the trash-stealing squirrels in our neighborhood.

Given how much they love their new IKEA farm set from Aunt Eve and Uncle Jed, we had high hopes that they might really enjoy the 4-H fair last weekend. Okay, maybe our hopes weren't high, but we did have hopes. I mean, what kids don't like petting bunny rabbits (our kids, our kids don't like petting bunny rabbits).

Eleanor really loved the horses, until one of them
turned to look at her. Then she yelled, "Nuh! Nuh! Nuh!"
and tried to climb over Mommy's back.

Melinda pictured here because the girls were too
"chicken" to hold the chicks. Get it?
Adelaide did end up working up the courage after a
few minutes. But, it hopped off her hand
pretty quickly, so no snapshot.

Bawk, bawk! To be fair, there was some
genuine love for the chickens. Eleanor tried
communicating with them for several minutes.
We think the giant cage helped the comfort levels.

That's more like it! Eleanor's favorite animal
is a Deere, a John Deere.

Here comes farmer Adelaide.

So they cried at the pigs, ran from the uncaged rabbits and would only moo at the cows from a great distance. Oh well. Country livin' ain't fer everyone. There were some horses a the fair the kids really did like though.

The ones on the antique carousel...

...the stick ponies in the kid's area...

and of course the balloon horses!

And they were down with painted unicorns...

Eleanor - with hair!

After torturing our children with fresh air and green earth, we went to visit our friends the Rahlfs for a much more urban activity. A dinner date at IKEA (don't laugh, we needed new baskets).

Some princess time before we headed out.

Rahlf-tastic!

Anika: Baby!
Eleanor: mrpffth?
