Things You Never Knew You Had to Have

While we were enjoying our time in the Northeast last month, Matt’s mom gave us a Bob’s Red Mill Catalogue. Bob’s Red Mill is located in Oregon (you can find the products in almost any grocery store).

While flipping through the incredible assortment of flours ground from unusual ingredients, we came upon something that peaked our interest. There was a small listing for “spurtles.” The accompanying picture looked like a bunch of sticks.

A bit of internet research later, we learned that spurtles aren’t just sticks. Well, actually, they are just sticks. But, they are sticks with hundreds of years of tradition behind them. Spurtles are used to stir porridge and keep it from clumping without tearing apart the oh-so tender oats.

How had we lived our whole lives with abused, spoon-stirred oats? We had to have a spurtle! But, we also weren’t willing to pay $12.99 (or anything else) for a glorified stick…. So, we did what any porridge lovers with some time on their hands would do. That’s right, we got a stick and spurtle-ized it.

Now we're cooking! All those tender un-torn oats, delicious.

Adelaide loves oatmeal too,
but she's more into the Gerber variety.

Jed and Eve, being supportive of our eccentricities, gave us some Bob’s Red Mill, Steel Cut Oats for Christmas. These oats won the Golden Spurtle award at the World Porridge Making Championship in Scotland (no, we’re not making this up).

Behold, the Golden Spurtle!

We're thinking of going into the spurtle making business, as there really is a fabulous mark up on these things...
