The Polynesian Cultural Center

Today we had the opportunity to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Melinda's been before, and it was just as fun and interesting and delightful and delicious as she remembered.

The center is divided into "islands" where you can watch presentations about different polynesian cultures (with lots of dancing, singing, drumming and good humor). And, each village has fun activities.

We smashed coconuts, wove coconut leaves, cheered for a boat parade and more. We even tried dancing with poi balls - though that really meant we just whacked ourselves with them a lot. They make it look so easy!

Eleanor hasn't stopped flashing her shaka
sign since she learned how to do it.

Steven is showing off his new Maori tattoo.

The Samoan village told Adelaide that
cracking coconuts was "man's work."
Her reply... let me at it.

The Hawaiian hula dancers were Adelaide's favorite part of the trip. She's been taking hula after school and was so excited to see real hula dancers, really, really, real ones - for real.

Adelaide was so happy to meet some of the
dancers after their performance.

And, then one of the dancers taught them a short dance
while another performer sang and played ukelele.
Adelaide was just in heaven.

Joe and Emily are such awesome cousins. Not only did they let us crash their place, they took our girls for the evening so we could stay for the luau and night show (way past bedtime). They took the girls to a BBQ party at BYU-H, with bounce castles included! That's some A+ babysitting.

Walking around with Steven
- go to sleep dude.

Tiki torches lit - time to feast!

The laua was amazing, everything tasted incredible. Steven joined us for this because, he's a bit rough on sitters. Also, we knew he'd fall asleep in the stroller. During the laua we saw incredible performers, including a 15 year old female fire knife dancer that was just amazing. Adelaide would have loved that girl power moment.

Since this trip is our big 10th anniversary hurrah. So, we lived it up! Extra papaya, more pork! Matt even dragged Melinda up to the stage for the couples dance.

We wrapped up the day watching the night show. Amazing dancing, incredible singing, just a great evening. It's a good thing we have one of these anniversary thingies every year. Lots of opportunities for a repeat of this memorable evening!
