Bathroom Remodel

The Saturday before we let for Florida, we came down to our living room to find this...

Are ceilings supposed to bubble up like that?

Matt took a break from his studying to rip up some flooring in the kids' bathroom. The entire subfloor was ruined from a leak behind the tub. With Matt needing to study for finals, Melinda unable to properly wield a crowbar, Adelaide developing new fears about the structural integrity of our home, and Eleanor... well, actually Eleanor was chill-  we called for reinforcements.

Fortunately, Eleanor's daycare provider's husband is a licensed contractor. Even more fortunately (for us), he had a break in his week while waiting for some backordered custom cabinets to arrive for his current project.

Sinan - our hero!

Eleanor was completely unfazed by the
change of scenery during bath time, and
mastered the operation of the vegetable sprayer
far too quickly for her mommy's tastes.

This is what the bathroom looked
like when we left for Florida.

Since the floor and the tub had to be ripped out, we did a total remodel. With it's yellow ceiling, misaligned peel-and-stick vinyl tiles and leaky faucets, it was probably overdue. There were a few late nights at Home Depot before we left town, trying to coordinate matching tile, vanity and fixtures based  on what was in stock and in budget. But, it was probably better we had to rush, so Melinda didn't have time to agonize over subtle shades of tan vs. beige in the tiles. Everything turned out lovely.

We finally have an electrical socket
in this room. Wahoo!

No more cracked tiles or chipped tub!

We're so happy with this bathroom, we've asked Sinan to fix up our master bath. We've got all this extra tile sitting around, we might as well. And, we're a wee bit jealous that the kids get to bathe in such luxury while our bathroom is the obvious victim of some kind of caulking explosion during previous ownership.

  5. What a beautiful job your friend did! But why would any conscientious builder neglect to put AT LEAST one electrical outlet in the bathroom?

  6. The house was built in the '70s. A lot of crazy things went on in the '70s... :)
